The third stage of Lift-Splat-Shoot: project candidate ego-vehicle trajectories onto the bird's-eye-view feature map, score them, and pick one. Doing this on the feature map rather than on a decoded list of detected objects is what makes the method an early example of coupling perception and planning inside one differentiable model. The verb is metaphorical — shooting out candidate paths and seeing which one costs least.
