Definition

In reinforcement learning this names an internally generated drive to act, as opposed to reward supplied by the environment. Intrinsic motivation — curiosity, novelty, prediction error, empowerment — exists to keep an agent exploring in sparse-reward settings where a purely extrinsic learner would never stumble onto the first success. Distinguish this technical sense from the ordinary one, where a paper's motivation section simply explains why the work was done.
