Definition
The first stage of Lift-Splat-Shoot: for each pixel of each camera image, predict a distribution over depths and use it to lift the 2D features into 3D points. The key choice is not committing to a single depth — monocular depth ambiguity is carried forward as a distribution rather than resolved prematurely. The everyday sense of raising something is the right intuition, but here it means raising dimensionality from the image plane into 3D space.
