Definition

Shortest paths on a curved space — the generalisation of a straight line, and on a sphere a segment of a great circle. They appear when representations are modelled as lying on a manifold rather than in flat Euclidean space, since distance and interpolation must then be measured along the surface, and when defining convolution on meshes, where the geodesic neighbourhood replaces the pixel window.
