Definition
A training scheme in which a model compresses its input into a compact code and then reconstructs the original from it, learning purely from reconstruction error and therefore needing no labels. It underpins representation learning and, once the code is treated as a latent random variable with approximate inference, the variational autoencoder — the framing introduced under the title Auto-Encoding Variational Bayes.
