understanding

Definition
Umbrella term for tasks that require extracting meaning from input rather than producing new content: classification, question answering, entailment, retrieval. It pairs with generation as the comprehension half of the field. Treat the word operationally — what gets measured is accuracy on specific benchmarks, not any verified internal comprehension, and researchers disagree sharply about how wide that gap is.
