Two distinct uses. One is investigative — "understanding why in-context learning works" — marking a paper that explains a mechanism rather than proposing a method. The other is task-oriented: natural language understanding covers classification, inference, and extraction, paired against generation. Whether a system that scores well in the second sense understands anything in the human sense remains contested, so the word claims more than it can always support.
