Definition

The external functions a model can invoke — a search engine, a calculator, a code interpreter, a database query, a company API. They exist to cover what a language model is unreliable at: exact arithmetic, current facts, and side effects on real systems. Keep them distinct from tool-calling, the mechanism by which the model reaches them; tools are what sits on the other end.
