Signals that a claim rests on derivation or proof rather than measurement: convergence and generalization bounds, equivalences between methods, impossibility results. It complements the experimental section instead of replacing it. Read such results with the assumptions in view — convexity, infinite data, exact optimisation — since guarantees that hold under them often say little about the model you will actually train.
