tangent

Definition

The direction along which a curve or surface locally points. At each point of a manifold the tangent space is the linear approximation used to define gradients and movement on curved geometry, which is why the word appears in geometric optimisation, flow-based generative models, and analyses such as the neural tangent kernel. It shares a root with the trigonometric tangent but rarely means that here.
