tail

Definition

The thin end of a distribution: individually rare events that are collectively common because there are so many kinds of them. Long-tail failure is the pattern where a system scores well on average yet breaks on the unusual cases, and simply adding data helps slowly because each new case is rare. In safety-critical domains such as driving or diagnosis, tail behaviour, not mean accuracy, decides whether a system is deployable.
