Definition

Data laid out as rows of examples and columns of heterogeneous features — the format of medical records, credit files, and most business data. Unlike images or text it carries no spatial or sequential structure, columns have independent meanings and scales, and column order is arbitrary. This is the domain where gradient-boosted trees remain competitive with deep networks, which is why the word recurs in comparison papers.
