Definition
When a title says "study," the contribution is knowledge rather than a new method: the authors take existing techniques or an observed phenomenon and measure it across controlled conditions. Empirical studies matter disproportionately in practice, because they are where inflated claims get retested under matched settings and sometimes fail. Judge them on fairness of comparison — same data, same budget, same tuning effort — not on novelty.
