Definition
Multiplying a value by itself. Squaring discards sign and weights large deviations disproportionately, which is why it underlies squared error, variance and RMS — and equally why those quantities are sensitive to outliers in a way absolute error is not. The geometric sense, a four-sided figure, exists but is rarely what a formula means.
