shogi

Definition

Japanese chess, in which captured pieces re-enter play on the capturing side — a rule that makes the branching factor and the character of the search problem meaningfully different from Western chess. It is usually named alongside Go and chess to support a generality argument: the same algorithm, unmodified, learned all three from the rules and self-play, so nothing in it was tailored to one game.
