Definition

The sentence as a unit of processing — coarser than a token, finer than a document. Sentence-level embeddings became the working unit for retrieval, similarity, and clustering because they capture word order and syntax that averaged word vectors throw away. In current practice the label is looser than it sounds: models described as sentence encoders are routinely applied to paragraphs or retrieval chunks well beyond one sentence.
