semantic

Definition
Concerned with meaning rather than surface form. It marks tasks and metrics that should be invariant to rewording — semantic similarity, semantic search, semantic equivalence of two programs — and, in vision, the assignment of a category to every pixel. The standing contrast is with lexical or syntactic measures that compare strings. In practice semantic metrics are operationalized by embeddings or by a model's judgment, so they approximate meaning rather than capture it.
