self-consistency

Definition

Sampling several independent reasoning paths for the same question and taking a majority vote over the final answers. It works because there are many routes to the right answer and comparatively few that converge on the same wrong one, so errors fail to agree. It is the clearest example of buying accuracy with inference-time compute, and it requires no change to the model itself.
