search

Definition

Covers two distinct senses. One is retrieval: finding relevant documents or passages, by embedding similarity or classical inverted indexes. The other is search over a solution space — beam search, tree search, sampling many candidate reasoning paths and scoring them. The second sense underpins much recent test-time-compute work, where extra inference buys broader exploration of candidates.
