In generative modeling this is a specific object: the gradient of the log-density with respect to the input. Diffusion models estimate it and follow it to turn noise into samples, which is why the family is also called score-based. Score distillation reuses that estimate as a training signal for something else, such as a 3D scene. The everyday sense of a numeric grade also appears, so let the compound disambiguate.
