Definition

Sets up a contrast, almost always as rather than, and in titles it is the author explicitly rejecting the standard approach. The construction is a useful reading shortcut: whatever precedes rather than is the paper's actual claim, and whatever follows is the baseline being displaced. Checking that the two really are alternatives to the same problem — and not different problems — is often where the argument's weight sits.
