Almost always part of "pushing the limits" or "pushing the boundaries of X". It marks a paper that extends an existing line — more scale, better data, accumulated engineering — rather than one proposing a new framework. Treat it as promotional framing: the word tells you a record moved, but not by how much or under which conditions, which you have to dig out of the experiments.
