processing

Definition

A general word for operating on data, almost always seen inside a compound rather than alone: natural language processing, speech processing, signal processing. It names a field or a pipeline stage, not a technique, so it carries little information by itself. When a title says "processing", the load-bearing word is whatever precedes it.
