Guiding rules rather than a specific technique. A paper foregrounding principles is usually abstracting across many systems — naming the invariants a good design should satisfy, or the constraints a deployment must respect — instead of shipping one implementation. Such work is judged on generality, so it is worth checking how much of each stated principle is backed by evidence and how much is the authors' considered opinion.
