Definition

To keep an undesirable outcome from occurring. In method descriptions it marks purpose — prevent overfitting, prevent catastrophic forgetting, prevent mode collapse — telling you what failure the technique exists to head off. It is worth distinguishing from mitigate or correct, which imply reducing or repairing damage after the fact; prevent claims the design stops the problem from arising, and in practice most techniques only reduce its likelihood.
