place

Definition
Deciding where something goes. In chip design, placement is the stage that assigns physical locations on the die to logic cells, and it is always named alongside routing — place and route is the standard phrase for the back-end flow. It is a hard combinatorial optimisation whose objectives are wire length, timing, and congestion, and it is one of the first industrial problems where learned methods reached production use.
