Handing information to a neighbour; in practice you only meet it inside "message passing". Stacking k rounds lets each node's representation absorb structure from k hops away, so depth controls the receptive field over the graph. Depth is not free, though: too many rounds drive all node representations toward each other, the failure mode known as over-smoothing.
