oracle

Definition

A hypothetical component that always returns the right answer. It is used to compute an upper bound: swap in an oracle retriever or an oracle stopping rule, rerun the pipeline, and the gap tells you how much of the total error is attributable to that stage. Numbers reported under an oracle are ceilings, not achievements, and blurring that distinction oversells a result.
