Definition
Natural language processing: getting computers to handle human language. The field used to be a collection of task-specific pipelines — translation, summarization, QA, named-entity recognition, each with its own models — and pre-trained language models collapsed most of that into adapting one backbone. Its boundary with speech and vision research has blurred as models became multimodal.
