Definition
Natural language generation: the family of tasks where the model produces text — summarisation, translation, dialogue response, data-to-text. It is the counterpart of NLU, which consumes text and emits labels or structure, and it has always been the harder side to evaluate since there is rarely one correct output. Now that generation dominates, the acronym survives mostly in evaluation papers and task taxonomies.
