Definition

Neural Radiance Fields: fit a small network mapping a 3D point and viewing direction to color and density, then render novel views by integrating along camera rays. Introduced in 2020, it reframed 3D reconstruction as fitting a continuous function per scene rather than building a mesh, and its view-synthesis quality reset expectations for the field. Its weakness is speed, in both fitting and rendering, which is what Instant NGP and Gaussian splatting attack.
