Definition

On its own it just means shared or reciprocal; in ML it almost always arrives as half of mutual information, the quantity measuring how much knowing one random variable reduces uncertainty about another. The symmetry is the point — I(X;Y) equals I(Y;X) — which is why the word is mutual rather than conditional.
