Holding the same signal at several levels of granularity at once, so coarse levels carry global structure and fine levels carry detail. The idea is old — image pyramids, wavelets — but it is what makes Instant NGP's hash encoding work: features are looked up at multiple grid resolutions and concatenated, letting a tiny MLP fit high-frequency detail that would otherwise demand a large network.
