The middle of a long input — the stretch between the beginning and the end, which models tend to use least reliably. This has direct engineering consequences in retrieval-augmented systems: the order in which retrieved passages are laid out changes what the model actually draws on, which is why the most relevant document is commonly placed first or last rather than buried in the middle.
