metric

Definition
A quantity chosen to stand in for quality — task-specific ones like F1 or word error rate, or distributional proxies like FID for generation. The choice bounds what a paper can claim, so the useful question is not which number is higher but what the metric fails to see; proxies get optimised directly once they become the target. Note the collision with the mathematical sense of a distance function.
