Definition
Pertaining to internal states. Two compounds carry the term in AI work: mental state, as in whether a model can attribute beliefs and intentions to others — theory of mind — and mental model, the internal representation a system appears to hold of how something works. Used carefully, the word describes behaviour observed from outside; it is not a claim that the system has inner experience.
