GLOSSARY
mel

Definition
A perceptual frequency scale that spaces bands finely at low frequencies and coarsely at high ones, matching how human hearing resolves pitch. It rarely appears alone — you see it inside mel spectrogram or mel filterbank, where it replaces linear frequency as the axis. The point is compactness aligned with perception: mel features discard detail the ear would not notice anyway, which is not the same as being physically faithful.
