Definition

Driving an objective to its largest value. Much of ML is written as minimisation of a loss, but many formulations are more natural as maximisation — of likelihood, of a variational lower bound, of mutual information between views. The two are the same problem up to a sign, so the choice of framing is convention and readability rather than substance.
