"Linearly" sharpens a representation claim: the information is recoverable by a single linear read-out — a dot product with one direction — rather than by an arbitrarily powerful decoder. That distinction matters because a sufficiently expressive probe can extract almost anything, which makes the unqualified claim nearly vacuous. Linear decodability suggests the model organized the property along a real direction in activation space, which is what makes steering along it plausible.
