Obtained from data rather than hand-designed. The word does contrastive work: learned prior, learned image compression, learned optimiser all signal that a component previously specified by an engineer or a standards committee is now fitted by gradient descent. Distinguish it from trained or pretrained, which describe a model's state; learned points at the origin of a design decision.
