Definition

A place where research is done — but in current papers it usually names a simulated one: an environment in which agents carry out the research loop themselves, proposing hypotheses, running experiments, and writing up results inside a closed system. The framing lets authors ask how much of the scientific process can be automated, and it makes the evaluation question awkward, since the lab also defines what counts as a finding.
