Arising from within rather than being supplied externally. In reinforcement learning, intrinsic rewards are generated by the agent itself — from novelty, curiosity, or prediction error — to drive exploration where environment reward is sparse. In representation and fine-tuning work, intrinsic dimension refers to the much smaller number of effective degrees of freedom underlying a high-dimensional parameter space, an observation that motivates low-rank adaptation.
