Definition
Free of a particular dependency: language-independent means the method avoids language-specific preprocessing and assumptions, so it applies unchanged across writing systems, while task-independent means no per-task engineering is required. Both are generality claims. In a statistical context the word means something else entirely — probabilistic independence, as in the i.i.d. assumption about training samples — so the surrounding sentence decides which sense is in play.
