Definition

Signals an incremental contribution: the paper takes an existing method and makes it better, usually stated as "improving X by Y." That framing is informative — it tells you the baseline is the real point of comparison, so the questions are how strong that baseline was and how large the gain is relative to run-to-run noise. Incremental is not a criticism; most durable progress looks like this.
