Definition

To move a number in the right direction relative to a stated baseline. A title built on "improving" usually promises a modification to an existing method rather than a new framework, which makes the choice of baseline the load-bearing detail. Improvements are only interpretable with the comparison held fixed — same data, same compute, same evaluation protocol — otherwise the delta may come from the setup rather than the idea.
