GLOSSARY
imitation

Definition
Learning a behavior by copying demonstrations rather than by optimizing a reward. In robotics and control this is imitation learning from expert trajectories; in language modeling it usually means fine-tuning on outputs collected from a stronger model. The recurring critique of the latter is that imitation transfers style and format far more reliably than it transfers the underlying capability, so the gap reappears on harder held-out problems.
