GLOSSARY
hyperprior
appears in 1 paper titles
Definition
In learned image compression, a second and much smaller latent carrying side information about the distribution of the main latent. The entropy model conditions on it, so the bits spent transmitting the hyperprior are repaid by tighter probability estimates and shorter codes for everything else. The name is literal: a prior over the parameters of a prior, one level up the hierarchy.
