harmlessness

Definition
The property of not producing harmful output — one leg of the helpful, honest, harmless triad used to frame alignment targets. The important structural fact is that the legs trade off: pushing harmlessness hard produces over-refusal, where the model declines benign requests and helpfulness drops. Because of that, a harmlessness score reported without a matching helpfulness measurement tells you very little.
