Producing new content — text, images, audio, video, code — rather than selecting a label from a fixed set. The distinction matters for evaluation: classification has a correct answer to compare against, while generation usually needs reference-based metrics, model judges, or human raters. The word covers both the act and its output, as in "the generation was truncated."
