Definition

To produce new output rather than select from fixed options, token by token for language models or iteratively for diffusion. The defining consequence is evaluative: with no single correct answer, quality has to be judged by human raters, model judges, or task-specific checks. It is also worth remembering that the same weights generate very differently depending on decoding strategy, sampling temperature, and how much inference-time compute is spent.
